Washington (Times Of Ocean)- The White House announced Thursday that President Joe Biden will speak with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Friday for their first known discussion in months.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki’s announcement comes a few days after a US diplomatic cable indicated that China may be willing to provide Russia with requested military and financial assistance. US officials familiar with the intelligence said earlier this week that it is still unclear whether China intends to provide Russia with that assistance.
“This is part of our ongoing efforts to maintain open lines of communication between the United States and the PRC,” Psaki said, using the abbreviation for the People’s Republic of China. “The two Leaders will discuss managing the competition between our two countries as well as Russia’s war against Ukraine and other issues of mutual concern.”
Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan and top Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi met for seven hours in Rome before the announcement of the call.
Sullivan warned his Chinese counterpart that support for Russia would have “potential implications and consequences” for China, a senior administration official said.
According to two sources familiar with the matter, Russia requested prepackaged, non-perishable military food kits from China. The request highlights the logistical challenges the Russian military faces and raises questions about its overall readiness. Since their invasion began more than two weeks ago, Russian forces have suffered logistical and strategic setbacks. Joe Biden
