Paris (The Times Groupe)- The Elysee office said on Thursday that France supported Finland’s bid to join NATO despite threats from Russia.

French President Emmanuel Macron told his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto that France “fully supports Finland’s sovereign decision to join NATO soon,” according to a statement from his office.

A statement from the embassy said Niinisto presented Finland’s views on the security situation in Europe and the region earlier in the day at a meeting of EU envoys hosted by the French Embassy in Helsinki.

Agnes Cukierman, the French envoy, said France would support any decision Finland makes regarding NATO membership.

Finns announced plans to apply for NATO membership as soon as possible, citing Russia’s war on Ukraine. The Kremlin responded by saying it would take the necessary measures to ensure security.

Russia has warned against the eastward expansion of NATO, which it said would constitute a threat to its security.
