WorldAt US request, Fiji seizes the yacht of Russian oligarch worth $300M

Suva (The Times Groupe)- The US Justice Department said on Thursday that a $300 million yacht belonging to Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov was seized in Fiji.

“Fijian law enforcement executed a seizure warrant freezing the Motor Yacht Amadea (the Amadea), a 348-foot luxury vessel owned by sanctioned Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov,” the department said in a statement.

In a statement, Fijian law enforcement, with the assistance of the FBI, seized the yacht after a US district court found that it was subject to forfeiture based on probable cause for violations of US law, including money laundering.

According to the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, Kerimov is part of a group of Russian oligarchs who “profit from the Russian government through corruption and malign activity around the globe, including the occupation of Crimea.”

“The Justice Department will not relent in holding accountable those who facilitate the death and destruction that we are witnessing in Ukraine,” US Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

Kerimov, who is believed to be close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, is among several Russian oligarchs sanctioned by the US, EU, and UK over the Ukraine war.

Forbes estimates his net worth at $14.5 billion, making him Russia’s ninth richest person.
